Making university and career advice accessible to aspiring students in Spelthorne
Our mission
We feel we have an obligation to help students in our local community as much as we can to overcome the challenges they face in today’s world. We have therefore set up The Student Success Club - an initiative dedicated to:
“Making university and career advice accessible to aspiring students in Spelthorne”
The goal of the Student Success Club is to allow individuals to take advantage of what we have learnt through the tough challenges we faced, and the path we took to overcome such challenges. We want to help students become clearer about what they want to do in future and then support them in making informed choices to achieve their goals.
Who do we help
We focus on students in Years 11, 12 and 13 (i.e. those aged 15 to 18 years) - critical years in which so many decisions are made that affect their futures, and applications are made to access universities or the employment market.
What help do we give
We provide support and guidance through the following:
We, Jamain and Munib, are locally brought up individuals, who both came from very difficult, under-privileged backgrounds, were educated in different local state-schools, and found our way to success. We are both blessed by having been able to reach a very high level in our careers (one of us is a Partner at a global consultancy firm, and the other is a Senior Banker at one of the world’s largest banks).
We often reflect back on our respective journeys and that we did not have much guidance or support, going through the local education system, to help us find the path to fulfill our goals. After more than 20 years, the same issues we experienced at school still exist and we would like to help.
After graduating with a degree in Mathematics from LSE, Munib joined the Bank of England and has been working in the Financial Services field for nearly 25 years.
Munib has worked in senior positions at some of the largest global consulting organisations, including PwC, Ernst & Young and IBM, and has also held senior roles at global banking organisations, namely Barclays and Santander.
Munib is a dedicated father, husband and Arsenal fan.
After graduating with a degree in History from the University of Bristol, Jamain has been working in the Financial Services industry for over 15 years.
Jamain is currently a Senior Product Owner at Barclays. He started his career on the Ernst & Young graduate Consulting scheme, before working in senior positions at PwC, the FCA and Barclays. Jamain also runs AvoidingBroke, a growing initiative dedicated to providing financial education to all of society.
Jamain is a committed dad to two amazing boys, a husband and Arsenal fan.
